기술 및 추론 통계는 통계 과학의 두가지 주요 분야이다.
(1) Descriptive statistics
기술적 통계는 데이터에 대한 간결한 요약을 제공한다.
데이터를 숫자 / 그래픽으로 요약할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 패스트푸드점의 관리자는 일주일 동안 점심 시간 동안 고객의 대기 시간을 추적하고 데이터를 요약한다.
(2) Inferential statistics
모집단으로 부터 추출한 데이터의 무작위 표본을 사용하여 모집단을 설명하고 추론한다.
전체 모집단의 각 구성원을 조사하는 것이 편리하지 않거나 불가능할 때 유용하다.
공장에서 제작된 각 못의 직경을 측정하는 것은 비현실적이다.
그러나 대표적인 무작위 샘플 못의 직경을 측정하고 그 정보를 사용해서 제작된 모든 못의 직경에 대한 일반화를 만들 수 있다.
